Deana Atteberry '11 MARB

Member of SAFSN since 2016

Secretary of SAFSN BOD: 2018- 2020

Membership Development Officer: 2020-2023

I have served on the Fundraising Committee for golf tournaments, tailgates, and reunions. I also chair the Membership Committee and work closely with the Board's communications officer.

I am honored to be nominated to be the President of SAFSN. Once I learned about the Sea Aggie Former Student Network, I was ready to get involved. As a student at TAMUG I thought there was an opportunity to increase funding and recognition of this amazing school. I believe that SAFSN is making great strides to meet these goals by raising TAMUG's prestige to people outside of Galveston. SAFSN has established an endowed scholarship, and we are a recognized name not only at TAMUG but also at Main Campus. The Board members have been working hard to grow our membership and increase the organization's value to the members.

I am a 3rd generation Aggie. The traditions of A&M have been a part of my whole life. Hearing stories from my Grandfather of the Corps and the band, I knew this was where I belonged, but I also had a passion for the ocean. My Grandfather sent me to Sea Camp, and in Galveston, I found my HOME. I enjoyed my college experience of being involved and learning from professors in the field. I want all students of TAMUG to be able to cherish the unique gift of this island campus. I am married to my husband, Former Yell Leader James Atteberry '12. We have two beautiful children, Delylah (7) and Joltyn (2). My family, across generations, enjoys our time in Aggieland and Galveston.

As president, I want to assist the Board in achieving its many goals. We want more social events throughout the year. We recognize the value of creating networking opportunities. The Board intends to resume the Speaker Series with engaging, dynamic guest speakers. We are also planning Family Day events that include activities for the next generation of Sea Aggies. The annual golf tournament is the primary funding instrument for the endowed scholarship, and as a body, we want to grow this endowment to give out more scholarships each year. We are considering bringing a fishing tournament or skeet shooting tournament to our members to allow us to fund other projects on campus as well. I want to continue building our membership and create a new business membership for Sea Aggie-owned companies. This business membership has been a goal of the Board for a while, and we envision that this will help bring businesses together with our Sea Aggie community. The Sea Aggie Former Student Network is doing great work, and I want to help facilitate achieving these crucial goals.

How long you have been a member and involved with SAFSN and positions held (Board Position, Committees, Volunteer Opportunities)? - Recently joined; currently handle the marketing for YoungShip Texas. I joined that board in 2019 and have been active ever since.
Why would you like to be considered for your nominated position? - I have slowly fallen away from being connected to Texas A&M since graduating, especially the Galveston campus. I would love to become more involved again, and ensure that other former students can feel connected to their alma mater!
What are your goals or contributions you would like to bring to the Organization? - my goals are to spread the word about this organization to more former students, and host more events that are more accessible. Numerous former students do not work for companies that can sponsor the golf events that we host. More happy hours and networking opportunities to connect more former students would be beneficial for everyone! I bring lots of experience planning these types of events and marketing from being on the YoungShip Texas board. I am constantly working or interacting with maritime industry colleagues and would love to connect former students, both old and new, to this industry and create a new, fun and beneficial environment for Former Sea Aggies. Gig ‘em!

I have over a quarter of a century of maritime industry engagement for both commercial world, academics, and federal/international level of regulatory and policy. I have served on unlimited tankers, OSVs, lightering vessels, and harbor tugs. I enjoy all of the maritime industry, along with the economic overlap between business and environmental impacts. Currently, I have work in the Maritime Transportation Academic Department which allows me to understand the complexities of linking SAFSN with the campus activities, faculty, staff, and most importantly the students.

SAFSN Goals:

To continue to broaden the SAFSN Office to our students. I want a synergy to develop around the office which provides opportunities and networking for our current students, former students, and the workforce which we are associated! I will fulfill this goal with mentoring current students in initiating the SAFSN Student Organization. This will provide more active engagement between SAFSN and the campus. As the Campus Liaison, I know I can motivate and connect our graduates with our students to find better paths than we have ever before, along with involving campus with SAFSN needs to succeed.

SAFSN Golf Committee Chair since 2021.

Why would you like to be considered for your nominated position?

For three consecutive years I have lead the Golf committee and engaged the industry and Alumni to support our annual fundraiser, as a member of the board I feel I can grow that support and have a vote in other areas to help raise awareness and strengthen the industry support of SAFSN. We have a great platform to grow scholarships and mentor existing student, as the Industry Liaison, I see this as an opportunity to engage our future leaders and current leaders - opening the opportunities to build our maritime industry future more cohesively.

What are your goals or contributions you would like to bring to the Organization?

If chosen to be on the board I hope to bring more tangible ideas and actions in to play for SAFSN. Expand on the connectivity of what we are aiming for as an organization, facilitating the growth for fundraising, the community networking and the overall net worth of what the students together with SAFSN bring to the Maritime sector.

Miranda is a globally recognized Maritime Consultant ranging from offshore/inland vessel brokerage and fleet management, crew management support, ship repair projects, and international ‘expert witness’ amongst other extensive Maritime business related expertise. For the recent three years Miranda has served Mercy Ships, the world’s largest non-profit Charity, operating two hospital ships serving the less fortunate countries lacking life-saving surgical care. From roles consulting on development and recruitment of Mariners and other technical all volunteer crew to currently supporting the organization by growing partnerships with the Maritime industry for GIK, SIK and long term engagement for employees and donations.

Her 22+ years of maritime experience span the full scope of operational and commercial roles including time spent heavily involved with the development of groups like WISTA Middle East (founding board-member), Women Offshore, WISTA Texas, International Propeller Club, Propeller Club of Houston, International Association Woman in Business (IAW) and Global Maritime Community GMC-US Ambassador.

Miranda began her maritime and business life with Bsc. in Maritime Business (MARA) from Texas A&M University-Galveston, later an MBA in International Maritime Management.  Currently an active member of SeaAggie Former Student Network (Golf Tournament Chair)
