Howdy,
My name is Deana Atteberry. I am the Loudest, Proudest member of the Fightin' Aggie class of 2011. Growing up as a 3rd Gen I always knew Aggieland was where I belonged. My Grandfather Edward C. Rodriguez ’51 and my mother Priscilla Hertzler ’82, shared stories from school and I was hooked. I graduated with my degree in Marine Biology after my love for animals brought me to Aggieland by the Sea. After graduating I worked offshore as a protected species observer. Pretty cool to watch turtles from helicopters. Soon after some time I began working at Moody Gardens in their education department and later moved to the Kemah Aquarium to be a biologist/diver and run their education department. I now run two home businesses, one caring for pets, and raising future Aggies, Class of ’37 and ’42, with my husband former Yell Leader James Atteberry ’12. I LOVE the Aggie culture and I am so proud to be on the board to help instill the Aggie Traditions past the 4 years in college and into our career lives. I look forward to getting to meet more Ol’ Sea Ags and hear their stories as well, and what they hope for the future of our beloved school

Over 20 years in the MART Department, I expanded the Marine Transportation degree to meet niche specific needs of the maritime industry by creating inland and near coastal opportunities by her promoting the creation of the Tug and Tow program and Dynamic Program. My passion is to continuously ensure the curriculum maintains the flexibility for graduates to be the highest credentialed and qualified to enter the merchant marines. I teach Terrestrial Navigation and Marine Survey. I serve as Faculty Advisor and creator of the first State Maritime Academy’s Council of Master Mariner Cadet Chapter.
I graduated in 1996 with Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation at the Texas Maritime Academy (Texas A&M University at Galveston), Masters of Business Administration from Phoenix University in 2008, and Doctorate of Business Administration focusing in Leadership from Walden University in 2018. I joined Texas A&M at Galveston in 2000 as a lecturer and continuously advanced through the ranks to become the first female Maritime Transportation Department Head in 2012.
While teaching, I oversaw the creation and implementation of International Maritime Organization’s Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), United States Coast Guard, and Maritime Administration (MARAD) regulatory requirements and training of merchant marine officers. I was the primary designer of the Maritime Simulation and Seamanship Lab Facilities at Texas A&M University at Galveston.
She heavily engages in maritime industry to create internships at sea and endowments, which includes her own Fuel Fund Endowment to provide scholarships for her students in License Option Programs going on sea terms.
